Marcus, the late Lord Frewin, was a handsome, disipated man. Perhaps capable of greater things, he was nevertheless best known for his dissolute style of living and a certain feckless charm that gained him admirers, even amongst his creditors. He was devoted to his children, all agree, especially to his daughter Phoebe, who is believed to possess much of his charm (but not, it is to be hoped, his unsteady character. The same cannot be said for his relationship with his wife, Lylias. Some have said that with a different wife, he might have achieved more in life. That is possible. It is also possible that hios wife too could have been happier with a man who had less of an eye for pretty women, less of a taste for good wine, and less propensity to spend a good proportion of his life at the gaming tables.
