BACKGROUND:
The twins grew up in a Shadow called Blythe with their father (who they called Farve, and adored, and their mother (Mama). A nasty twist there was that she was a Shadow Flora. Brand got bored with the Shadow Flora and had her killed when the twins were about 11; the twins learned early that boring Farve was a Bad Idea. Fortunately, they were an engaging and amusing pair.

Blythe was sort of relaxed C17th century England. Large old Elizabethan style manor.

Brand had always taken off for trips; the twins were used to it. But when they were about 17, an armed party turned up at the manor, led by Caine, and took the twins hostage. They were taken to Amber - this was shortly before Corwin returned, and Eric crowned himself King. When that happened, they used the confusion to escape to fast Shadows - adided by their Father - and spent time there until he (unknown to them) was captured by Bleys and Fiona. After that, they were on their own - and were eventually recaptured and brought back to Amber to be hostages. Some hundred years had passed for them; it had been a week in Amber.

Since then, they were held as hostages in Amber until Patternfall. Far less time - but to them it seemed infinitely longer ... Now they no longer have a purpose as hostages - but they are not exactly free either ...

They are also wary and defensive ...having spent a key portion of their development as captives. Occasionally they refer to little things ... petty cruelties. Unable to travel in Shadow, they have very little money compared with the others, so they make do ... Emma repairs her own clothes. They have no real servants of their own. The experience has left them with a fierce hatred of Caine.

On the positive side, the twins are great party-givers (it's an excuse to get free food and alcohol, for one thing). They also make friends easily ...

PHYSICAL DESRIPTION: Emma is tall, elegant and graceful, with dark auburn curls and clear hazel eyes. She is not stunningly beautiful - 'lovely' is a term more commonly used to decribe her. She can, if needs be - ne athletic - scrambling over rooftops in a black leather catsuit is one of her hobbies. It is perhaps unsurprising that she has a train of besotted young nobles ... PERSONALITY: Emma is attractive, elegant and seems quiet in comparison with her flamboyant twin & yet she too has wit and liveliness. As skilled lute player, she frequently accompanies her brother when he sings & there are other activities where she does not accompany her brother however. She is an excellent rider (in Amber she rides side saddle) and is proud of her reputation as a bruising rider to hounds. In the field, nothing daunts her; no ditch is too wide, no hedge to high for her to take, it sometimes seems. If she is occasionally thrown, she will never lose the reins, and be back in the saddle in a trice - especially if given a boost back into the saddle by one of her cousins & she will follow a run through to the very end - although she will avert her eyes from the actual sight of the kill.

Emma is an excellent listener & for both men and women, and will listen to any who have problems. She is at times flirtatious and at times appears to enjoy having her own little court of Amberite young nobles at her feet. But she does seem to treat this as some huge delightful game & from which she withdraws at times & a little wistful and pensive.
