Twenty-five years have passed on Aquila, and a new day has dawned. The two Decumas have reached their majority, bringing the reign of Regent Delan, Lord Anderon, to a close, and posing some interesting questions to the Anderon. At the University, excitement is brewing as the Pro-Technology movement grows stronger. And from the spaceport, several faces are appearing or reappearing on Aquila's soil.

Rosalor, Lady Bahlmis hosts a salon for Aquila's affluent and intellectually curious. The topic? Off-World Technology, forbidden on Aquila's surface. With many of Aquila's elite present - not to mention some hot headed students, this could be a far from peaceful meeting.

Add to that the fact that Decuma Maun has returned from his off-world journey, and may well make an appearance - to first time in deveral years he and his half-brother, Harry Decuma Maun, have come face to face.

From the seat of Rome, the planet of Nova Roma, a papal legate is being sent to look into the legality of Atropos's divorce from Lady Nira.

In the Palazzo Accaio, the home of Acciaio, the Dragon is calling his family together one last time, before he passes from one world into the next.

En Route to Aquila: the Lasses return to Aquila in the person of their only daughter, Salla. And Treasa Bahlmis, a scion of the Bahlmis family, sets out on a dangerous journey to the planet that her late father taught her to call home, much to the irritation of her brother, Drew.

Influenza has struck Aquila . Affected, among others, are Bea, Lady Anderon, and Lilly, Lady Tremonatine. Dr. Lucas Bahlmis and Dr. Olivia Bahlmis-Greywood are being kept busy at their respective hospitals.

Salon
Rosalor, Lady Bahlmis, is hosting a salon at her home, Bahlmis House. Various members of the intelligentsia are present, including the Lord Regent, Delan, Lord Anderon, Lord Talaren Bahlmis, Lucien, Lord Tremontaine, Dr. Hoberty (a late arrival), and Roderigo, Lord Oswestry. The Lagorans have arrived - and Lady Nira has announced that her son, Decuma has returned to Aquila - and will be joining the Salon shortly. People believe that he has perhaps returned to assert his claim to the Dukedom.

Also present at the Salon are various members of the younger generation - including Harry (Decuma) Maun, the holder of the disputed Dukedom, his half brother Lord Alexander Tremontaine, and his half-sister Lady Renata Tremontaine, as well as the Regent's crippled elder son, Lord Giulian Anderon, and Giulian's half-brother, Jack Kennington-Anderon.

Acting as waiters at the Salon are three young students, Jovanna Starr, Devon Byreroth and Sasha Matisse. Jovanna, one of the ringleaders of the student movement for technology on Aquila , has already shared her forthright views with the Salon, with the support of Devon while Sasha tries to merge into the background.

Jovanna has issued a challenge to the young lords of Aquila - to try for themselves to live the life of Aquilian citizens. So far Renata, Harry and Giulian have accepted the challenge, and Giulian has issued a counter challenge to Jovanna to see what the work of governing really involves, something that his father Delan has agreed to support. Lucien and Nira have both spoken out against the idea.

Meanwhile ...

Acciaio Palazzo
At the Palazzo, the Acciaio family are attempting to come to terms with the death of the elderly Arturo, Lord Acciaio. Present are his son Nicola, now Lord Acciaio, his younger son Rugero, his daughter Ofelia, his daughters-in-law Iolanthe and Nellie, and numerous grandchildren.

Romeo, Rugero and Nellie's oldest son, has informed his twin sister Aurora that he has formed the intention of transferring to military school.

Anderon House
Pieter Petravich, employee of the Lasse family (in the galactic operation as the KLO), has returned to collect an artefact he left behind, nearly twenty-five years earlier. He failed to find anyone at the Nest, and instead went to find Lord or Lady Anderon, firstly at the Nest (where he was placed under arrest, as a suspicious outsider) and then at Anderon House where his arrival in chains appalled Bea, Lady Anderon. Now freed from the chains, he is talking with Bea.


And offworld ...

Nova Roma
The Pope, Ariston XV, briefs his legate, Cardinal Micahle Fiore, on his mission to Aquila , where he is to adjudicate on the divorce between the late Atropos, Duke of Aquila and his first wife Nira. This adjudication will, it is believed, decide who will become Duke of Aquila. His deacon for the trip, Ronan O'Byrne, is briefed by Father Mortis on his duties - it appears that the Deacon will be doubling as a bodyguard. While Fiore learns about the politics of his mission, O'Byrne learns about the role played by the KLO, and something of the mysterious circumstances surrounding the assassination of Atropos, twenty-five years before.

The briefing completed, they are now ready to depart for Aquila .

Kalkan to Aquila
Travelling to Aquila for the first time in twenty-three years, Lady Salla Lasse encounters Treasa Bahlmis, also travelling to Aquila in search of the home planet her family left so many years before. They have just landed on Aquila and are preparing to disembark. Salla has offered to see that Treasa reaches Bahlmis House safely.

Heading towards Aquila
Drew Bahlmis, Treasa's brother, is anxiously following his sister across the galaxy, towards Aquila . He has just taken passage on a KLO slave ship.
